DrugScope Responds To New Figures On Levels Of Drug Use: ‘marked Increase’ In Cocaine Use Among Adults And 16-24 Year Olds
DrugScope has responded to the publication of two government reports detailing the prevalence of drug use among adults and young people. The Home Office’s Drug misuse declared: Findings from the British Crime Survey 2008/09 presents estimates of the prevalence of illegal drug use among 16 to 59 year olds in England and Wales. HIV Infection And Chronic Drinking Have A Synergistic, Damaging Effect On The Brain
At least half of clinic patients with the human immunodeficiency virus report they also drink heavily. Findings show that co-existing HIV infection and chronic alcoholism synergistically damage brain function. Specifically, immediate episodic memory was impaired, while working memory remained intact. Governor Crist Applauds Comprehensive Drug Control Strategy
Governor Charlie Crist today applauded the 2009 strategy to combat substance abuse and addiction as outlined in Florida’s 2009 Drug Control Strategy report. The strategy establishes guidelines for policy recommendations for the administration based on a philosophy that promotes health and drug abuse awareness among Florida’s families and communities. Discovery May Provide New Treatments For Alcohol Dependence
Researchers have discovered a new brain mechanism involved in alcohol addiction involving the stomach hormone ghrelin. When ghrelin’s actions in the brain are blocked, alcohol’s effects on the reward system are reduced.
