Increasing neurogenesis might prevent drug addiction and relapse
Researchers hope they have begun paving a new pathway in the fight against drug dependence. Their hypothesis — that increasing the normally occurring process of making nerve cells might prevent addiction — is based on a rodent study demonstrating that blocking new growth of specific brain nerve cells increases vulnerability for cocaine addiction and relapse. The Long-Term Effects of Prenatal Nicotine Exposure on Neurologic Development
A large body of documented evidence has found that smoking during pregnancy is harmful to both the mother and the fetus. Prenatal exposure to nicotine in various forms alters neurologic development in experimental animals and may increase the risk for neurologic conditions in humans. There is a positive association between maternal smoking and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS); however, the connection between nicotine addiction, depression, attention disorders, and learning and behavior problems in humans is not straightforward. Nicotine’s action on the production and function of neurotransmitters makes it a prime suspect in the pathology of these diseases. Nicotine accentuates neurotransmitter function in adults but desensitizes these functions in prenatally exposed infants and children… (More)

Efficacy of psychostimulant drugs for cocaine dependence.
CONCLUSIONS: This review found mixed results, therefore evidence of the efficacy of psychostimulants for cocaine dependence is inconclusive. Nevertheless promising results exist for methadone maintained dual heroin-cocaine addicts and for some specific drugs such as dexamphetamine and bupropion. WITHDRAWN: Dopamine agonists for cocaine dependence.
CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence does not support the clinical use of dopamine agonists in the treatment of cocaine dependence. Given the high rate of dropouts in this population, clinicians may consider adding other supportive measures aiming to keep patients in treatment. DSM-V Draft Includes Major Changes to Addictive Disease Classifications
