Researchers have proven the usefulness of DUWAS, a new scale for measuring addiction to work, a disorder that affects around 12 percent of all working people in Spain. The experts say that 8 percent of the working population in Spain devotes more than 12 hours per day to their job. (More)

U.S. and Mexico Expand Antidrug Cooperation
A new $331-million antidrug strategy unveiled this week by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would build on the Bush administration’s so-called Merida Initiative and improve cooperation between intelligence communities, border screening, community law enforcement, and joint socioeconomic programs intended to reduce youth involvement in drug crime. Large Study Affirms Heart Health Benefits of Moderate Drinking
A new study of about 250,000 Americans gave new support to the claim that moderate alcohol consumption benefits coronary health, but this study and a new research review both conclude that heavier drinking confers no health benefits. (More)

Malpractice Claims Associated with Medication Management for Chronic Pain
Conclusions: Most anesthesia malpractice claims for medication management problems involved patients with a history of risk behaviors commonly associated with medication misuse. Malpractice claims arising from medication management had a high proportion of deaths with both patient and physician contributions to the outcome. Binge drinking doesn’t affect next-day student test-taking
In a first-of-its kind controlled experiment, researchers have found that surprisingly, binge drinking the night before a test does not impact college students’ test performance — although it can affect their moods, attention and reaction times. (More)

Brain abnormalities identified that result from prenatal methamphetamine exposure
Children whose mothers abused methamphetamine (meth) during pregnancy show brain abnormalities that may be more severe than that of children exposed to alcohol prenatally, according to a new study. While researchers have long known that drug abuse during pregnancy can alter fetal brain development, this finding shows the potential impact of meth. Identifying vulnerable brain structures may help predict particular learning and behavioral problems in meth-exposed children. (More)
