Taking care of smoker cancer patients: a review and some recommendations
A cancer patient who smokes is a very fragile person and we identify in scientific literature three main areas of clinical practice and research to develop the care of smokers with cancer. (i) Telling facts: smoking impacts on the survival and on the outcomes of surgery, chemo-, radio- and biological therapies. The aim of our intervention was to enable patients to make informed choices about smoking. (ii) Offering sensitive and effective smoking cessation like an instrument of patient empowerment to motivate change in smoker patient lifestyle. (iii) Assisting smoker patients if they develop acute nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Psychiatrists Support Call For Alcohol Minimum Pricing, Northern Ireland
The Royal College of Psychiatrists in Northern Ireland wholeheartedly supports Health Minister Michael McGimpsey’s call for minimum pricing for alcohol, saying that this could save lives as well as money. The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) issued a report showing that the cost of alcohol abuse in Northern Ireland is up to £900 million a year. Scientists are reporting the first identification of a chemical basis for people’s preference for certain brands of vodka, which outsells rum, gin, whiskey and tequila. They found that vodka differs from simple water-ethanol solutions in ways that could alter vodka’s perceived taste. (More)

Alcohol use and smoking are associated with headaches in high schoolers
Alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking were associated with increased migraines and tension-type headaches in high school students, according to new research. Coffee drinking and physical inactivity were associated specifically with migraines. (More)

Woman Who Put Methadone In Baby’s Pacifier To Stop Him Crying Jailed For Three Years
Susan Taylor, 29, from Edinburgh, Scotland has been jailed for three years for putting methadone – a heroin substitute – in a baby’s pacifier (dummy) to stop him crying. Ms. Taylor admitted to a charge of culpably and recklessly causing the baby to ingest methadone, to the danger of his life in November, 2008. Ms. Taylor said he was a “grumpy” baby. She says she rolled the pacifier in her methadone measuring cup before putting it in his mouth. Binge drinkers report sub-optimal health status more often than non-binge drinkers
Binge drinking accounts for more than half of 79,000 excessive-drinking deaths annually in the United States. A new study has looked at heavy and binge drinking in relation to drinkers’ own perceptions of their overall health status. Results show binge drinkers have a 13 to 23 percent greater likelihood of self-reporting fair to poor health status. (More)

Supplement may prevent alcohol-related brain, skull defects
The dietary supplement CDP-choline, sold as a brain-boosting agent and under study for stroke and traumatic brain injury, may block skull and brain damage that can result from alcohol consumption early in pregnancy, researchers report. Alcohol consumption in early pregnancy increases levels of a little-known lipid called ceramide, significantly increasing suicide among cells critical to skull and brain formation. (More)

Impulsivity-related problem drinking decreases greatly for 18- to 25-year-olds
Impulsivity normally decreases during emerging and young adulthood and is associated with reduced substance abuse. Not all individuals, however, “mature out” of impulsive behavior. A new study has found that 18-to-25-year-olds exhibited the largest declines in impulsivity as well as the sharpest decreases in alcohol consumption. (More)
